- Selmer Nelson was born April 16, 1919 on a farm near Madison, Minnesota. After attending a small country school, he graduated from Canby High School in 1937. Military service pulled him away from the family farm in 1941. After four years of teaching Army Air Corp pilots as an instrument flight instructor, he left the Army in 1945 with the rank of sergeant.
- His life path then led him to Sioux Falls, South Dakota where he married Genevieve Skoglund on February 19, 1946. In 1980 he ended a 35 year career at Jordan Millwork as mill manager. Along with retirement travel and family visits, Selmer was active as a member of East Side Lutheran Church, American Legion, and the Moose Lodge. Selmer and Genevieve spent many of their holidays serving meals at the local community shelter.
- Following the death of his wife Genevieve in October 2007, Selmer's life was highlighted by time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Grateful for having shared his life are his daughter Sandra Kron (husband Gary), his son David (wife Beth); four grandchildren: Eric Kron (wife Rebecca), Erin Meneely (husband Brian), Molly Nelson, and Chloe Nelson; four great-grandchildren: Anderson Kron, Emersyn Kron, Sawyer Kron and Michael Meneely; and his nephew Stanley Nelson (wife Cheryl).
- In addition to his wife, Selmer was preceded in death by his parents Sanford and Elsie, and his brother Oren.
- Selmer's family requests that memorials be directed to the St. Francis House to help move people from homelessness to hope.
