- Bio: Evelyn M. Sheldon, Sioux Falls, SD, died April 29, 2007, at her home. Surrounded by her loving family, Evelyn passed away quietly following a courageous battle with cancer. She was 82. Evelyn was born on May 5, 1924, in Worthing, SD, to George and Matilda (Orstad) Abbas. She was raised on her family's farm near Worthing, where she graduated from high school in 1942. Evelyn then moved to Sioux Falls. For a period of time she worked as a nanny. Evelyn then started her employment with the State Theatre, selling tickets and working as a bookkeeper. In 1947, she began her career as a clerk with the Minnehaha Treasurers Office and Register of Deeds. Evelyn was united in marriage to Lyle Sheldon on December 5, 1953. In 1962, she left the work force to become a homemaker. Evelyn was known throughout the neighborhood as a welcoming "mom" to many children, and treated everyone like a best friend. She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, where she was involved with church circle, and a member of the Daughters of the Nile. A superb host, Evelyn was thrilled to entertain family and friends. For many years, she hosted Bridge Clubs and was an avid bridge player. She looked forward to holidays and holiday traditions, when she would prepare the home for family activities. She loved her family deeply and cherished each moment with her grandchildren. Young at heart, she converted her home to a children's paradise when the grandchildren would come over. Everything turned into fun at Grandma's. Blessed with a gracious spirit, Evelyn will be forever cherished. Grateful for having shared her life are her relatives; sons, Kevin Sheldon and his wife, Lori, Sioux Falls, SD, Todd Sheldon and his wife, Melissa, North Oaks, MN; daughter, Sheila Smith-Hahn and her husband, Sam, Brandon, SD; seven grandchildren, Bobbi, Shad, Brooke, Regan, Mark, Mikael, and Katie; sisters, Lorna Cornelius, Elvera Myrabo, Marlene Paulsmeyer and her husband, Dean, Elaine Thacher and her husband, Don, Joyce Swenson and her husband, Charles, and Janice Vaught and her husband, Bruce. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Clifford. Funeral Services at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, with interment at Woodlawn Cemetery.
