- Bio: Joan Domke, age 82, of Huron, passed away Monday, November 18, 2019, at the Huron Regional Medical Center, surrounded by her family. Her funeral service was Friday, November 22nd, the American Lutheran Church, Huron. Burial was in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery.
- Joan Domke was born July 7, 1937, in the Methodist Hospital in Mitchell, South Dakota, to Olaf and Ruth (Gjesdal) Jacobson. She attended Hopper for her elementary schooling, then Mt. Vernon High School, graduating in 1955. She attended Augustana College from 1957 to 1959, graduating with an Associate Degree in Elementary Education. On June 1, 1958, she married Arnold Domke at the American Lutheran Church in Huron, South Dakota.
- After graduating from college, Joan started her teaching at Garfield School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Arnold and Joan lived in several towns including Parkston, Spearfish, Canistota and Wessington; where she taught until retirement at Wessington Elementary School.
- Arnold and Joan purchased the bank in Wessington and eventually expanded it to include locations in Tulare, Highmore and Redfield. They were proud of the communities in which they lived and served in.
- A devoted Dallas Cowboy fan, Joan also enjoyed gardening, laughter, reading, sports of all kinds, traveling, antiques, recipes and squirrels; but most of all she loved her FAMILY. Holidays with family were always a very special time for her. Joan was a God fearing woman of Christ.
- Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold; her parents, Olaf and Ruth Jacobson; her parents in law, Edward and Amelia Domke; three brothers-in-law, Harold Domke, Philip Kolbe and Seth Spearstra; and three sisters-in-law, Ruth Kolbe, Irene Spearstra and Judith Domke.
- Grateful to have shared in her life are her four children, Rodney (Crystal) Domke of Highmore, Naomi (Jeff) Reinhardt of Huron, Paul (Tami) Domke of Redfield and Scott (Shelli) Domke of Redfield; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother, Dr. Arland (Willy) Jacobson of Moorhead, Minnesota; one brother-in-law, David (Martha) Domke of Marlboro, Massachusetts; a foreign exchange student “son”, Asbjørn Myrvåg of Norway; and many nieces and nephews.
