Rev. A. Buckneberg, Pioneer Minister, Passes Away
    • Hundreds of Friends from Northwest North Dakota attended Last Rites Held at Bethlehem Church Last Monday Afternoon, May 9th.
    • The Rev. A. Buckneberg, pioneer pastor residing south of Larson, and serving a number of churches in that vicinity, passed away at his home last week, Wednesday, May 4th at 8:25pm after an illness of over a year. Rev. Buckneberg suffered a stroke about a year ago, but rallied and was able to be up and around, though not strong and in good health. Since that time he suffered several lighter strokes and on March 12th was taken seriously ill and confined to bed, and never recovered. He passed away quietly and at Peace with His Maker last week, Wednesday May 4th, with his devoted wife and loving family at his bedside.
Reverend Adolf Buckneberg was born on February 14, 1875 at Bokn, near Stavanger, Norway of parents Jacob and Maline Buckneberg. At the age of 18 years he came to the United States with his parents, his destination being Inwood, Iowa.
In 1897 he enlisted in the United States Army and served as a corporal in the Second Cavalry. His period of enlistment was during the Spanish American War. He was stationed in Cuba for some over a year and was honorably discharged from the service in the year 1900.
    • In the fall of 1900 he entered the Lutheran Noraml School of Sioux Falls, S.D. from which he was graduated. After this he taught parochial school at Fosston, Minnesota for a year. In the fall of 1902 he entered the Luther Theological Seminary at St. Paul and in 1905 was ordained at Flaxton by Rev. N. A. Larson, now of Ames, Iowa. Rev. Buckneberg continued to serve in the vicinity of Flaxton in the pioneer days, his call being Flaxton and westward. As time went on his district was divided and lignite became his headquarters. He then took up a homestead in order to establish a home for himself and better serve his congregations. At one time he served eleven congregations. As there congregations grew larger they divided again, and he has served South St. Olaf, Scandia and Bethlehem since that time.
    • In 1907 Rev. Buckneberg was united in marriage to Ida Marie Iaskson of Colfax, Wisconsin. To this union was born five daughters and two sons, Marie, Thelma, Adolf, Valborg, Jullen, Ada and Arlene. Besides his children he is survived by his wife and one sister, Mrs. Elene Nelson of Canton, S. D. and one brother, Rev. I Buckneberg of Keene, ND. His parents and one sister and five brothers have preceded him in death.
    • Rev. Buckneberg was truly a Christian man and pioneer, the friend of everyone and untiring in his efforts to serve his God, humanity, the community and his country. During the early days of his ministry he suffered many hardships and privations, but always went about his work administering to others and teaching the Word of God cheerfully and uncomplainingly. He was pastor to hundreds upon hundreds of early pioneers in Burke County, who sincerely mourn his death, but who are better men and better women because of his work among them. During Rev. Buckenberg's ministry he performed 955 baptisms, confirmed 486 young people in the Lutheran faith, performed 89 marriages and officiated at 168 burial services.
    • One of the largest crowds ever to attend a funeral in this community were present at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, south Columbus, one Rev. Buckneberg, home churches, built by him in 1913, on Monday May 9th at 2pm. Six Lutheran pastors, namely Rev. J. Aarthun of Lingite, Rev. C. I. Sauer of Kenmare, Rev. G.W. Mathre of Plaza, Rev. K.O. Waage of Noonan, Rev. O.J. akre of Ambrose and Rev. J.W. Rosholt of Columbus served as pall-bearers. Rev. J.W. Rosholt, pastor of the First Lutheran Church, Columbus, was in charge of the funeral services and was assisted by Rev. Aarthun, Rev. Sauer and Rev. Waage. Rev. J. Aartunm officiated at devotions held at the Buckneberg home at 1:30pm. Interment was made in the church cemetery, on a sunny knoll just just south of the church building proper.
    • Music at the funeral services was furnished by the Scandia Choir, under the direction of M. Sathre of Battleview, and a solo by Mrs. Elmer Brenno of Columbus.
    • Out of town relatives and close friends present at the funeral services were: Rev. and Mrs. I Buckneberg of Keene, ND, Conrad and Caroline Isakson, brother and sister of Mrs. Buckneberg of St. Paul, Minn, Mr. and Mrs. Adolf Buckneberg of Hendricks, Minn, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Jacobson of Rudyard, Montana, Mrs. C. I. Sauter of Kenmore and Mrs. G. Mathre of Plaza. Friends of Rev. Buckneberg from towns and communities all over notherwestern North Dakota were present to pay their last respects to a man they loved and honored.
    • $120 was donated to missions and charities in memory of Rev. Buckneberg by organizations and friends, and there were a large number of floral contributions.
    • The community deeply mourns the passing of Rev. Buckneberg, a beloved pastor, patriot and good American citizen, and they join in extending heartfelt sympathy to the sorrowing wife and children in the loss of a splendid husband and father. Bless be his memory.
