- Bio: Melvin Richard Hecht, 84, Hills, died Friday, Sept. 10, 2010, at the Tuff Memorial Home in Hills.Funeral services were Monday, Sept. 13, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Hills. The Rev. Mahlon Bekedam officiated. Burial followed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church Cemetery in Hills. Melvin Hecht was born on Aug. 31, 1926, to Albert and Anna (Bahr) Hecht on a farm near Larchwood, Iowa. He graduated from Larchwood High School. On Sept. 18, 1947, he married Violet Erland at First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, S.D. The couple lived on a farm near Larchwood and continued to live there until he retired in 1988. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Hills, was on the church council, taught Sunday school and served as Sunday school superintendent. He enjoyed woodworking, furniture repair and building and flying model airplanes. He enjoyed flying so much he learned to fly a full-size 1948 Taylorcraft plane. He could fix or build anything, including his own home and outbuilding. He also enjoyed fishing and attending his grandchildren's school events. Mr. Hecht is survived by four children, Larry (Maggie) Hecht, Larchwood, Sharon Rossow (friend, Howard Warriner), Hills, David (Nancy) Hecht, South Sioux City, Neb., and Kevin (Lori) Hecht, Centerville, S.D.; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews and cousins.He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Violet on Nov. 16, 2006; and two brothers, Donald and Ernest Hecht.Jurrens Funeral Home of Hills was in charge of arrangements.
