- Bio: Alf Rognald Eide, 89, of Fertile, MN died on Thursday May 17, 2012 (den Syttende Mai), at Fair Meadow Nursing Home, Fertile. He was born November 4, 1922, one of eight children to Clara (Nelson) and Odd Eide. He was baptized November 5, 1922, and confirmed at Concordia Lutheran Church. He graduated from Fertile High School in 1940 and attended University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
- Alf returned to Fertile in 1941 and worked for his father in Eide Mercantile Co. He took over the business in 1952 with his brother Anders. His family's business celebrated a 100th Anniversary in 1982 and he retired in 1997 after serving the community for 115 years. In retirement he enjoyed visiting with family and friends and relaxing out at the cabin on Union Lake.
- Alf married Verna Marie Sanden, daughter of Anna (Hillesland) and Roy Sanden on August 24, 1952 at 1st Lutheran Church in Mahnomen, MN. They were blessed with children: Helen Jean, James, John & Lisa. Alf was active in the Fertile community in Cub and Boy Scouts, Concordia Lutheran Church where he was a member of the board of trustees, Sunday school teacher and Luther League advisor. He was a member of the Fertile Community Club where Alf was president and director and in 1981 was chosen as Citizen of the Year. Alf was a charter member of the Fertile Lions Club and has served as secretary, director and named Melvin Jones Fellow. He was a member of the MN Grocers Association. He was involved with the Ski Devil ski area as an initial investor, and in later years as a volunteer at the Fertile Environmental Center.
- Alf is survived by his wife, Verna, sons James (Sally Jo), West Fargo, ND; John (Lina), Fargo, ND; a daughter, Lisa Bartholomew (John Bartholomew) Richland, WA; four grandchildren David & Thomas Eide, Maxwell & Isabel Bartholomew, many nieces, nephews and lifelong friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Odd & Clara, brothers Arne, Anders, Arvid & Roald, sisters Anna, Alfhild, Agnes, and two daughters Helen Jean and a baby daughter.
- Funeral: Tuesday May 22, 2012, at 11AM in Concordia Lutheran Church, Fertile MN.
- Visitation: 5-7PM Monday with a 6:30PM prayer service at Erikson-Vik Funeral Home, Fertile, MN.
