Served in the U.S. Navy. married to the former Ruth M. Langager in Webster, S.D., May 31, 1941.Originally in business with his father in Varland Agency on North Main Street; for the past several years devoted himself to the real estate part of the business, entering semi-retirement in 1982. Navy veteran of World War II, serving as lieutenant three years. Charter member of Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, served on the church Council and was a past treasurer; also former member of World Mission ALC. Graduated from Rockford High School, St. Olaf College in 1939 and did graduate study at University of Iowa. Holder of CPCU designation. Served on Blackhawk Area Council of Boy Scouts of America; recipient of Silver Beaver and Lamb awards; past president of Protestant Welfare; board member of Illinois Children's Home and Aid Society; and member of Kiwanis Club. Survivors include wife, Ruth; five daughters, Mrs. Ronald (Kristine) Will, Mrs. William (Sela) Varland-Sattlemeyer, Mrs. Edwin E. (Susan) Herricks, Mrs. Fred (Johannah) Varland-Wilkie, and Mrs. William (Elsa) Varland-Ehrhardt; a son, Eric Varland; 10 grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Charles A. (Sela) Cibeilus and Mrs. Daniel(Joan) Jensen; a brother, Markeson Varland.
